RFID data model for Dutch Public Libraries

The purpose of the RFID data model for public libraries is the use on great scale of RFID in libraries without high costs or vendor lock in. The broad introduction of RFID for self service has proved its success en delivered a great gain in efficiency. The increased efficiency in comparison to the traditional lending processes is mostly used in the new additional tasks of libraries.

The newest version (5.0) of the RFID datamodel can be found here.

How to obtain object identifiers

Vendors of RFID solutions active in Dutch public libraries will probably need object identifiers to supply old book collections with RFID tags. In this case the vendor can apply for object identifiers by contacting Evert Slot (slot@siob.nl). Obtaining object identifiers is free of charge, however activities for public libraries in the Netherlands and Flanders are required by the applicant.

Certification of RFID vendors and other relevant parties in the use of the RFID datamodel

To prevent incomplete or incorrect use of the data model in public libraries, a certification process will be established for all parties who use the data model. So, not only the public library itself, but also its vendors of RFID solutions, tags and library automation will have to be certified. The details of the certification process are still to be determined. Certification of public libraries will be part of the new round on certification in 2014-2017.

International standardisation

With the correct use of RFID data model version 5.0 a willing migration to ISO 28560, the international standard for RFID is possible. By the active involvement of the Netherlands in the Workgroup 11 of the standardisation process (even as an editor) it is achieved that the migration can be unambiguous and willing. During the ISO (International Organization for Standardisation) standardisation process the Dutch public libraries turned out to be international frontrunners in the application of RFID. And also in the Netherlands itself, RFID in libraries is one of the RFID applications with the largest scale. During the visit of EU servant Santucci to Public Library of Amsterdam in november 2010 it was clear one could be proud about this!
